Black bear cub peeking out from behind a tree.
Brown bear (Ursus arctos) Taken at Brooks Camp, Katmai National Park Alaska, USA. While their mother was out fishing to fatten up for the fast approaching winter, the family of cubs played in the grasses on the shore. Three of the four siblings stood to see over the grass when they heard an approaching sub-adult bear who mistakenly wandered to close to the cubs. The forth cub stayed hidden in the grass nearby. And the mother quickly charged out of the water to chase the sub-adult away while the cubs watched anxiously. This image was taken from a viewing platform near the mouth of the river, where the bears are able to do their natural behaviors and the people are kept out of their way.
